How is the modern conception of freedom dependent upon notions of intimacy for its definition and functioning? By reviewing intimacy as a cultural artifact of the 19th century European movements for bourgeois freedom and liberalism, we will examine the interconnectedness of intimacy and freedom for modern peoples. We will then look at some radical movements by sexual minorities of color in the U.S. who argue that intimacy is a tactic of heterosexist and heteronormative oppression. Our analysis will suggest these movements have much to teach not just about the violence of heterosexual intimacy but also about the violence of modern freedom.
